Maintenance Mechanic/Machinist

SUPERVISED BY: Maintenance Lead/Maintenance Supervisor/Maintenance Manager

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SCHEDULE: 1:00pm-9:30pm

SALARY RANGE: $30-$40 /hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The Maintenance Mechanic/Machinist conducts machine setup, performs repairs/preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting on plant equipment to include, but not limited to: centrifuges, vacuum pumps, mixers, packaging machinery, conveyors, etc. This role will oversee any fabrication needs the facility may require for improvement efforts and repair/maintenance purposes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Leadership, the Maintenance Mechanic/machinist conducts repairs/preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of plant equipment in order to reduce mechanical downtime and keep product flows and production lines running at maximum efficiency. In addition, this role will oversee the general upkeep of the fabrication workshop and communicate any maintenance/repair necessities of the fabrication equipment to the Maintenance Leadership.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible to adhere to safety and quality expectations.
  • Follows proper Good Manufacturing Practices (“GMP”) and wears proper PPE for the job completed (Head, Ears, Eyes, Hand, and Foot protection, hair/beard nets, etc). Always be mindful of and adhere to GMP, Quality and Food Safety requirements.
  • Applies 5S principles when completing a job. Keeps work area clean, uncluttered and organized to increase safety, reduce waste, and optimize productivity.
  • Performs mechanical skills, including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair of packaging and production equipment.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance repairs of plant equipment, including but not limited to production equipment, gearboxes, centrifugal pumps, conveyors, packaging equipment, electrical motors, mixers.
  • Performs fabrication skills, including welding (MIG, Tig, Stick), with metal and other materials according to specifications, ensuring precision, tolerance, and quality results.
  • Reads and interprets equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance service.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and drawings to guide fabrication and assembly processes accurately.
  • Verifies part conformity and ensures accuracy/tolerance of benchwork through the use of precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, etc.
  • Perform and/or assists team members on emergency/unscheduled repairs of production equipment during production.
  • Installs replacement belts, filters, gears, chains and valves.
  • Rebuilds valves, pumps and gearboxes.
  • Troubleshoot pneumatic, electric and hydraulic machine problems and assist team members with necessary repairs.
  • Performs basic preventive maintenance tasks such as lubricating parts, drives chains, visual inspection, etc.

  • Comply with OSHA & CalOSHA safety and health rules (Confined Space, LOTO, etc).
  • Ensures tasks are completed in accordance with USDA, FDA, BRC, & Cal-OSHA standards.
  • Maintains accurate records of maintenance work performed during shift through CMMS
  • Provides regular status reports to maintenance leadership team.
  • Operates fabrication machinery, including mills, lathes, and drill presses with a strong understanding of safety protocols.
  • Operate powered lift vehicles and hand trucks to convey, move, and hoist materials.

Any combination of education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years of experience in a maintenance mechanic and machinist capacity and/or equivalent
  • combination of education and experience.
  • Trade School (of manufacturing relevance) and/or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Mechanical or Electrical Technical degree preferred.
  • OSHA certification preferred.
  • Ability to maintain regular and consistent attendance.
  • Ability to work holidays, weekends, overtime, or different shifts.
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and common sense.
  • Extensive experience in various welding techniques (e.g., Mig, Tig, Stick)
  • Ability to read schematics, blueprints and drawings.
  • Strong technical skills in the mechanical field.
  • Knowledge of maintenance systems, work order process, preventive/predictive maintenance, and 5S.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits and troubleshooting preferred.
  • Knowledge of welding stainless steel and other metals preferred.
  • Ability to manage stress and react quickly in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Self-directed, self-motivated, and ability to work independently with safety and accuracy.
  • Accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain powered lift vehicle certification.
  • Ability to use or learn how to use E-Maint CMMS program.
  • Able to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information with professionalism and discretion.

  • The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts and vibration, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
  • This position works 100% onsite, 4-5 days per week. May work required overtime.
