Coast Packing Co. Marks #NationalBeefTallowDay with First-Ever #BeefTallowFrenchFries ‘Tweet-to-Win’ Contest — and
‘Taste the Difference’ #TastiFryExperience at the OC Fair

As Coast Packing Company has been saying for generations, everyone loves beef tallow French fries.  Back in the day, beef fat fries were what made a certain major burger chain famous.

In recognition of #NationalBeefTallowDay, which took place in July on #FRYdayThe13th, consumers had the opportunity to tweet their love for French fries fried in beef tallow far and wide.  And they did, some poetically.

In June, Coast  put out a call for the most engaging tweets extolling beef tallow fries.  The contest provided an opportunity for participants to take home some serious bling while celebrating the first annual #NationalBeefTallowDay which, not so coincidentally, also happened to be #NationalFrenchFryDay.  The contest kicked off on July 5  and concluded on #FRYdayThe13th.  The contest’s expert judge was blogger/Mother Jones columnist/beef tallow fries lover Kevin Drum.

#NationalBeefTallowDay extended well beyond Twitter, as Coast teamed up with San Diego’s Tasti Burger®, a fixture since 1974 on the Southern California fair circuit, to “Taste the Difference” at this year’s Orange County Fair (which, coincidentally, opened on July 13).

On the culinary stage at the Fair in the OC Promenade, attendees were asked to “Free Your Inner Farmer,” the theme of this year’s fair, while sampling French fries prepared with beef tallow and peanut oil, and – guided in the art of sensory evaluation by Coast Packing Corporate Chef Ernie Miller and Tasti Burger’s Lori Southerlend — explore the delights, nuances and flavor profiles of each.  Tasters posted their photos and images to social media.

An initiative of The Healthy Fats Coalition, #NationalBeefTallowDay is a celebration of a traditional healthy animal fat – pure beef tallow shortening – that is now enjoying a resurgence within America’s food culture, in restaurants, fast food operations and home kitchens.

“In terms of freshness, flavor and texture, there really is no comparison to beef tallow French fries, which is exactly why we’re so delighted when consumers can taste for themselves, as they did at the OC Fair,” said Eric R. Gustafson, Coast Packing CEO.  “Toward that end, we at Coast Packing are continuing our efforts to demonstrate that healthy animal fats like tallow are tasty, traditional and amazingly palate-pleasing.”
